WHALE WATCHING IN PERU
Few tourists know that in northern Peru you can see these majestic marine creatures that depart from Patagonia and begin their annual pilgrimage in search of warm waters to bring their young into the world in a more pleasant and less dangerous environment.
The best times to see whales in Peru are between the months of July and October. Some whales continue to the waters of the Caribbean Sea and others stay to give birth in northern Peru, a few kilometers from the border with Ecuador, where the Peruvian Sea is a piece of the Caribbean with its warm turquoise waters and white sand beaches, a place where the temperature remains around 30° throughout the year.
The best areas to see the impressive whales in Peru are the beaches of Piura and Tumbes, with the beaches of El Nuro, Mancora, Cabo Blanco, Los Organos, and Punta Sal being the preferred places for whales to give birth. Nearly 30 species of whales have been reported to come to the Peruvian sea, the most common being humpback whales, named for the impressive arch they form with their spines when they dive into the water.
The gestation period for an adult whale is 11 months. Calves typically measure 3 to 4 meters in length at birth and weigh about 1 ton. They are nursed by their mothers for almost 12 months.
After this spectacular moment where the little whale calves are born and after spending their first weeks in these places, the enormous whales return with their young to the South of the American continent, Patagonia, on a long journey that can take 5 months until they reach their destination, where they will remain for a few months until returning again the following year in their search for warm waters, following the call of nature.
